Looking quickly and easily thinning? You are not alone. An estimated 50 million Americans will go on diets this year. And while some will succeed in taking the weight off very few – perhaps 5 percent – they manage to keep all of it in the long term.
One reason for low success rate is that many people look for quick and easy solutions to their weight problems. They find it hard to believe that in this age of scientific innovations and medical miracles that an effortless weight-loss method does not exist.
So succumb to the demands of quick-fix weight loss as "eat all you want and still get thin! "or" melt the fat away while you sleep! "And they invest their hopes (and money) in all types of slimming pills potions, equipment, slimming programs and hold the promise of a slimmer, happier future.
The weight loss business is a booming industry. Americans spend an estimated $ 30 million dollars a year on all kinds of weight loss programs and products, including diet foods and drinks. Trying to resolve all competing claims – often misleading, unproven, or simply false – can be confusing and costly.
This booklet is designed for giving the facts behind the claims, to help prevent fraud, and to encourage you to consider thoroughly the costs and consequences of decisions taken to lose weight.
The facts about weight loss
Being obese can have serious health consequences. These include an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallstones, and some forms of cancer. Losing weight can help reduce these risks. Here are some general points to be note:
Any claim you can lose weight effortlessly are false. The only proven way to lose weight is either to reduce the number of calories you eat or to increase the number of calories you burn through exercise. Most experts recommend a combination of both.
The very low calorie diets are not without risk and should be undertaken only under medical supervision. Unsupervised very low-calorie diets can deprive important nutrients and are potentially dangerous.
Fashion diets rarely have a permanent effect. The sudden and radical changes in their eating patterns are difficult to sustain over time. In addition, the so-called "crash" diets often send dieters into a cycle of quick weight loss, followed a "rebound" weight gain once again to eat normal, and difficult to reduce further when the diet of the day, attempted.
A losing weight and maintaining weight loss requires long-term changes in the daily diet and exercise habits. Many experts recommend a goal of losing about one pound per week. A modest reduction of 500 calories per day to achieve this goal, since a total reduction of 3,500 calories needed to lose one pound of fat. An important way to reduce your calorie intake is to learn and practice healthy eating habits.
In Search of the "bullet magic "
Some dieters set their hopes on pills and capsules that promise to "burn", "block" "Flush" or otherwise eliminate fat from the system. But science has not yet reached a low risk "magic bullet" for weight loss. Some pills can help control appetite, but can have serious side effects. (Amphetamines, for example, are highly addictive and can have a negative impact on the heart and central nervous system.) Other pills are utterly worthless.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a series of Attorney General have successfully brought cases against marketers of pills that claim to absorb or burn fat. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned 111 ingredients a Once you are in-the-counter diet products. None of these substances, including alcohol, caffeine, dextrose, and guar gum have proved effective in weight loss or appetite suppression.
Beware of the following products that are advertised as slimming asks:
Slimming patches, worn on the skin, have not been proven safe or effective. The FDA has seized millions of these products from manufacturers and promoters.
"Blockers fat "is intended to physically absorb fat and mechanically interfere with the fat a person eats.

Glucomannan is advertised as the "weight loss secret that has been in the East for more 500 years. "There is little evidence to support this root of the plant as a slimming product efficacy.
Some producers of volume or filling, such as products based on fiber, can absorb liquid and swell in the stomach, reducing hunger. Some loads, such as guar gum, can even be harmful, causing obstructions in the intestines, stomach or esophagus. The FDA has taken legal action against several promoters containing guar gum.
Spirulina, a species blue-green algae, has not proven effective for weight loss.
The fake devices and gadgets
False weight-loss devices range from those that are simply ineffective to those who are actually dangerous to your health. At a minimum, are a waste of your hard earned money. Some of the fraudulent devices that have been released on a diet hope over the years include:
Electrical muscle stimulators have legitimate use in the treatment physiotherapy. But the FDA has taken a number of them off the market because they were promoted to lose weight and tone the body. When used incorrectly, muscle stimulators can be dangerous and cause electrical shock and burns.
"Appetite suppression of glasses" are eyeglasses with colored lenses that claim to project common an image on the retina reducing the desire to eat. There is no evidence that these work.
"Magic weight-loss earrings" and custom-made devices installed on Buyer's ear in order to stimulate acupuncture points controlling hunger have not been proven effective.
Weight Loss Diet programs
Approximately 8 million Americans a year enroll in some kind of structured weight loss program involving diet diet liquid, special diet regimens, or medical or other supervision. In 1991, about 8,500 commercial diet centers were in operation throughout the country, many of them owned a half dozen national companies as well known.
Before you join a weight loss program, you should know that according to published studies relatively few participants succeed in keeping the weight off long term. Recently, the FTC brought action against several companies challenging weight loss and demands weight maintenance. Unfortunately, some other companies continue to make exaggerated claims.
The FTC stopped one company says that its program of rapid weight loss diet caused by the use of pills to "burn fat" and a drink mix of protein metabolism would be consistent. The FTC also took action against three major programs that use physician supervised liquid diets very low in calories, and agreed to stop making claims unless they could back with facts.
Before signing with a diet program, you might ask the following questions:
What are the health risks?
What data can show you proven weight loss program really work?
Do clients keep the weight after leaving the diet program?
What are the costs for membership, weekly fees, food, supplements, weight loss, maintenance and counseling? What is the payment schedule? Are the costs covered by health insurance? Do you give refunds if I drop out?
Do you have a maintenance program? Is it part of the package or is the extra cost?
What type of professional supervision is provided slimming? What are the credentials of these professionals?
What are the requirements weight loss program is? "There are special menus or foods, counseling visits, or exercise plans?

It is important for consumers to be wary of claims that seem too good to be true. When it comes to weight loss schemes, consumers should be particularly skeptical of claims containing words and phrases such as:
